Level Up Lesson: The Gap Nobody Talks About

Reader

Picture this.

You started a project in Houdini. You're making good progress, using what you've learned. And then all of a sudden, you get stuck.

You don't know what node to place next. You’re not even sure what to google to get help.

And the most frustrating part? Is that you know exactly what you want to make.

You can picture the final result in your head.

But somehow, that picture in your head isn't translating into the nodes you need to place.

It feels like your standing between a giant canyon gap, your completed project is on the other end, and there is no bridge in sight.

So you do what most people do.

You go find a tutorial. You follow along, it works, and you feel great.

Until next time... when the exact same thing happens again.

Here's the secret nobody tells you: the reason you keep ending up in this same place, has nothing to do with how many tutorials you’ve watched. It’s not about the nodes you know, or the techniques you’ve learned.

It goes much deeper than that.

I'm Will, and if you’re new here, you might be thinking who am I and why should you listen to me?

I've spent the last 5 years using Houdini professionally on projects for clients like Puma, the PGA Tour, and ESPN. And for the first two of those five years, I was stuck in the exact same loop you're probably in right now.

So trust me when I say, until you understand what’s actually causing this, you could waste hours or even years watching every Houdini tutorial on YouTube - yes even mine - and still open a blank file and feel completely lost.

I know this, because it happened to me. But once I figured out what I’m about to share, everything changed.

So if you stick with me through three chapters - I promise by the end you’ll never look at a blank Houdini file the same way again.

Chapter 1 of 3: The Gap Nobody Talks About

I want you to do something for me.

Imagine you just finished watching a great sci-fi movie (Project Hail Mary is one I want to see!). And in the movie there's a scene with a really cool shot where a spaceship flies through a city, dodges enemy blasters, and takes down an enemy fighter in a massive fireball of destruction.

You're inspired. Your excited, so you turn on your computer, and you open Houdini. Create a new project folder. A new Houdini file. And you decide you’ll recreate that shot all on your own.

As you look at your empty Houdini file, you are faced with one very intimidating question you now have to answer.

What node do you place first?

I’ll give you a second to think about it and come up with your answer….

Great now remember that answer. We’ll be coming back to that at the end of the article.

Here’s what’s interesting about that question I just asked you.

It either felt completely obvious to you which node you should place, or completely impossible.

Two artists, using the same software, with the same project goal, could have two different answers to that exact question.

How a Houdini artist or how you answer this question of “what node to place first?”, and more specifically the way you come up with your answer, is determined by your mastery of a skill that all Houdini artists have but few truly understand what it is.

To understand what this skill is, let’s think about learning a new language.

When you learn a new language you don't start by trying to write a novel. You start with single words. Then phrases, Then sentences. Then paragraphs. And slowly - the gap between what you want to say and what you can actually say slowly starts to shrink.

Houdini works exactly the same way.

If your goal is to create a line - that's simple. You can do that with a single node. The gap between your idea (the line) and what you need to build it (the nodes you need to place) is tiny, this gap is easy to cross. That’s like learning a single word.

If your goal is to create a cube - that’s slightly bigger. You could use a box node, a bound node, or a grid and extrude it - these would all be good options. The gap between your idea.. of making the cube, and the nodes you need to use to implement that idea in Houdini, is a little bigger now. In our new language, this is learning a simple phrase.

If your goal is to create a full building - suddenly there are a lot of unknowns. The gap between your idea and the nodes you need to bring that idea to life in Houdini has grown significantly. There are now tons of decisions to make before you even place a node. This is like writing a short story in our new language.

And if your goal is the spaceship destruction shot?

That’s like writing a full sci-fi trilogy, in this new language you just started learning.

Now here’s what nobody ever tells you.

That gap - between the idea in your head and your ability to execute it in Houdini - that gap is everything you need to do in Houdini to actually create the project.

Every node you need to place, every decision you need to make, and every problem you need to solve, is all living inside that gap.

And the only skill that lets you cross it is the ability to translate ideas into instructions.

This skill, is the secret language that a good artist has to master.

So no, you don’t need more nodes or more tutorials to stop getting stuck in Houdini.

You need one thing, the ability to take an idea and translate that idea into steps and instructions in Houdini. That process of translating, is crossing the gap.

Right now it probably feels like standing on one side of a canyon, staring at the other side with no bridge in sight. And the bigger the project goal, the wider and deeper the canyon feels.

So when you get lost mid-project, it's not your fault. You’re just standing at a gap you don't yet have the tools to cross.

But here's the good news - there's a system for crossing it. A repeatable, and predictable system that works on any project - no matter how big.

And that's what Chapter 2 is about, and you'll be getting that tomorrow.

Do you still remember what node you said you'd place first? If you reply and tell me what node it is, I'll tell you my answer ;)

That question is partially a trick question, but I'm curious if you had the same answer as me.
